DESCRIPTION:John of the Cross – Our Spiritual Guide on Path to Union with God\n\nSaturday 27 June 2026\n10:00  16:00\nThe House of Prayer (map)\n\n\nLed by Audrey Hamilton  \n‘If anyone is seeking God\, the Beloved is seeking that person much more’ \n                 (John of the Cross\, The Living Flame of Love 3:28) \nFrequently referred to as the ‘Mystical Doctor’ for his writings on the intimacy of union with God in prayer\, John of the Cross is a sure guide for our spiritual lives. \nJoin us as we explore the life and teaching of this great 16th Century Carmelite saint and close associate of St Teresa of Avila.  John knew the extremes of poverty\, hardship and pain but in the depths of suffering also knew the beauty and goodness of God dwelling deep within his soul.   He believed that God pours these gifts on all of creation\, clothing everything entirely in beauty and dignity.  We come to know and understand this more and more as we are drawn into intimate union with the Beloved. \nAs we pray with some of John’s writings\, so rich in Scripture\, may we too rejoice in our Beloved and learn to behold ourselves in his beauty (cf. DESCRIPTION:Making the Most of Daily Prayer course\n\nParticipating in the Daily Prayer of the church is an obligation for clergy\, and highly recommended for all God’s people. Anyone who has committed themselves to this practice for any period of time has probably experienced ‘dry patches’\, times when the practice seems to no longer inspire or nourish us\, or even when it stops completely.  In this in-person day course we will have the opportunity to remind ourselves of the various traditions and inspirations that have formed the practice of ‘saying the Daily Office’ as we know it today\, explore the wide-range of possibilities available to us\, have a think about how some patterns of Daily Prayer may work better for some than others\, share best practice\, and have lots of time for questions practical and theological. A reasonable amount of the focus will be on Common Worship Daily Prayer\, as that is probably the most widely used resource at the moment\, but we will look at and share other options and models as well.  Whether you lead others in prayer\, are looking to refresh your own practice\, or even start for the first time\, hopefully there will be nourishment and support to be found here
