DESCRIPTION:A creative workshop exploring the symbolism of trees in the Bible and what it means to be rooted in Christ. Taking inspiration from the glorious setting of Hilfield and some of the Romola’s own work\, the retreat will use a variety of media for creative expression and exploration of faith. The emphasis is on a contemplative approach to creativity\, and on the process of making rather than a finished product. Do not be put off if you don’t consider yourself to be a ‘creative’ person! All that is needed is openheartedness and a willingness to experiment a little! Basic materials will be provided\, but you are welcome to bring your own to use\, swap or share! \nRev. Dr Romola Parish is a former academic specialising in environmental change in mountains and deserts\, and a former environmental lawyer. She trained in traditional hand embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework and studied poetry at Oxford and Cardiff. She is now a non-stipendiary priest in the Church in Wales and holds exhibitions and runs creative retreats and workshops all over the UK. SUMMARY:Autumn IGR retreat at the House of the Resurrection\, Mirfield
DESCRIPTION:Our IGRs are Ignatian-style retreats. There are no addresses as in preached or themed retreats. Rather\, each person with the help of an experienced guide follows their own path as it seems God is leading them. The emphasis is on integrating body\, mind and heart in faith. \nThe pattern of the week is: \nSunday 25th October: arrive during the afternoon in time for Evensong (6.00 pm) This is followed by an informal supper with the Community and afterwards an introductory meeting with the whole group. \nMonday to Saturday: silence is kept. Each retreatant sees one of the guides each day to talk over the previous day’s prayers and gain a sense of direction for the day to come. Other set moments each day the daily Eucharist; times of silent prayer together in the evening (details will be given on the first evening if is happening); and three meals. Apart from these\, there is no other commitment.  No books that must be read\, letters written\, or chores that must be done. There is time simply to pray\, think\, mull over the words of scripture … to do nothing or to do something that helps to clear space for God.  Many people find it helpful to paint\, draw and go for walks – we pray as we are\, not overlooking our imaginations\, our bodies\, our memories\, hopes and fears. \nSaturday evening: There is usually an informal (optional) social gathering to ease out of the silence. \nSunday 1st November: Mattins\, Mass\, breakfast and depart (c. 10.00 am) \nAs you approach the week\, you might be wondering what it will be like.  Inspiring? Challenging?  Restful?  Liberating?   Life-changing?  You might find it any or all of these\, but those who have prayed in this way know without doubt that they have spent a week in God’s company. And that our God is\, as Gerard Hughes says\, a ‘God of surprises’. \nCost: £637 in a standard Retreat House room with shared bathrooms; £723.50 in an en-suite room.

DESCRIPTION:‘Lord\, teach us to pray’\n\nTuesday 27 October 2026\n19:00  20:15\nThe House of Prayer (map)\n\n\nLed by Audrey Hamilton \nSeven week course on prayer\, beginning on Tuesday 27 October November on Zoom\, 7pm – 8.15pm \nPrayer is at the heart of any relationship with God\, and this plea from the disciples to Jesus is the universal plea of all who long to draw closer to God.  And yet God is already closer to us than we can ever imagine.  Prayer helps us realise that.  Our short course will look at different ways of praying\, with emphasis on the relationship with God that they foster rather than as techniques to be mastered. \nThemes will include the Lord’s Prayer\, that response of Jesus to the disciples’ request\, along with Lectio Divina/Sacred Reading\, Imaginative Prayer\, Praying with Art and Centering Prayer.  Sessions will consist of input on the particular theme of the evening\, with times of silence followed by a plenary session as we grow together into a praying community.  Additional material will also be offered at the end of each session should people wish to go deeper in their own prayer time during the subsequent week. \nWhether you are ‘new’ to prayer – and in a sense we all begin again each day – or have been praying for a long time and are seeking some additional inspiration\, we hope this course has something for you.  A commitment to attend all seven sessions if possible would be helpful. \nThe course will meet on Zoom on the following Tuesdays: \n\n\nTuesday 27 October\, 7pm – 8.15pm \n\n\nTuesday 3 November\, 7pm – 8.15pm \n\n\nTuesday 10 November\, 7pm – 8.15pm \n\n\nTuesday 17 November\, 7pm – 8.15pm \n\n\nTuesday 24 November\, 7pm – 8.15pm \n\n\nTuesday 1 December\, 7pm – 8.15pm \n\n\nTuesday 8 December\, 7pm – 8.15pm \n\n\nCost: £55

DESCRIPTION:Icon-making Workshop\n\nWednesday 28 October 2026\n10:00  16:00\nThe House of Prayer (map)\n\n\nLed by Cari Bridgen  \nCome and make a Byzantine icon. This introductory course offers participants the opportunity to make an icon over six weeks. All materials will be provided including pigments and an authentic gessoed panel. With Cari’s guidance and support\, participants will be able to choose between two head and shoulders Byzantine images. During the course\, we will learn how to transfer the drawn image onto the panel\, mix pigments and consider colours\, and add layers of highlights beginning with the initial Proplasmos. We will not use gold leaf\, but there will be gold paint for haloes\, wings and garments. Our vision is to help people establish peace in themselves and become places of peace in the world. \nEach session includes a short talk\, a period of silent meditation practice (preceded by some basic guidelines for anyone who is new)\, and an opportunity for conversation afterwards. \nThe sessions are guided by Chris Whittington. Through times of input\, sharing\, and reflection\, we will explore Edith’s understanding of our relationship with God\, her emphasis on deep listening and contemplation\, and her ethical approach to discernment and desire which sought truth and freedom. \nEdith Stein speaks directly to the modern challenge of living through\, and encountering God in\, times of change\, crisis\, uncertainty and suffering. For Stein\, the more deeply we are drawn into God\, the more we must go out of our ourselves to carry the divine life into the world around us. \nStarts at 10am and finishes at 4pm.
