Creating a space for openness and curiosity\, OutoftheBox encourages people to respond authentically to their thoughts and feelings\, whatever their personal beliefs or values. The method is equally powerful in secular and spiritual contexts\, including in offices\, schools\, hospitals\, prisons\, therapeutic settings and churches.

DESCRIPTION:Making the Most of Daily Prayer course\n\nParticipating in the Daily Prayer of the church is an obligation for clergy\, and highly recommended for all God’s people. Anyone who has committed themselves to this practice for any period of time has probably experienced ‘dry patches’\, times when the practice seems to no longer inspire or nourish us\, or even when it stops completely.  In this in-person day course we will have the opportunity to remind ourselves of the various traditions and inspirations that have formed the practice of ‘saying the Daily Office’ as we know it today\, explore the wide-range of possibilities available to us\, have a think about how some patterns of Daily Prayer may work better for some than others\, share best practice\, and have lots of time for questions practical and theological. A reasonable amount of the focus will be on Common Worship Daily Prayer\, as that is probably the most widely used resource at the moment\, but we will look at and share other options and models as well.  Whether you lead others in prayer\, are looking to refresh your own practice\, or even start for the first time\, hopefully there will be nourishment and support to be found here

DESCRIPTION:Eyes to See: Turning towards God course\n\nMetanoia\, the invitation into a relationship with God that changes everything\, has been accepted in ways that have truly shaped history. In this course\, we will explore the trajectory of that relationship in the lives of four visionary figures: Francis and Clare of Assisi\, Dorothy Day and Oscar Romero. Each of these figures had to make challenging decisions and found meaning and fulfillment with each new step toward partnership with God. We will use the book Faces of Metanoia\, with its reflective prompts\, to guide and shape our conferences and quiet times. We will begin with dinner and an evening conference defining metanoia and exploring what transformation looks like. On the following day\, we will hold up moments of decision and change in each of these four lives\, exploring how we\, too\, have experienced some of these moments\, and considering God’s call to metanoia today. SUMMARY:Navigating transitions retreat at Sarum College
DESCRIPTION:Navigating Life Transitions: A 24hr Retreat course\n\nAre you in transition? Moving house\, country or job? Children have just arrived or have all just left? All transition and change is painful and involves losses and gains. In this retreat we share our experiences in a safe space and discover resources for finding new life in what is to come. Bring yourself\, wherever you are in transition and be open to what God might be up to. We will use a tried and tested framework for how transitions happen\, we will dwell in a pertinent bible text several times and there will be a mixture of short talks\, group interaction and reflective personal space. For those who wish (while we have capacity) there will be an opportunity to meet with a spiritual director for 30-40 minutes. \n  \nNigel has been a spiritual director for over fifteen years and has published on the subject of direction in “Soul Friendship” – and on transitions in a book called “Crossing Thresholds”. He has a portfolio of roles beyond tutoring at Sarum College from being an Associate Priest\, to a Journal Editor and consultant in church development. His most significant transition was going to work in the Anglican Church of Tanzania for seven years with his family in the 1990s.

DESCRIPTION:Rising Up out of the Centre: Thomas Merton on Prayer and Contemplation course\n\nThe first talk will address the interior life of prayer which Merton called “a consciousness of one’s union with God” and focus  on Merton’s 1966 letter to Abdul Aziz\, the only time he spoke of his own prayer practice and his letters to Etta Gullick (who worked with Ordinands at St Stephen’s in Oxford).The second talk  will address living the contemplative life of prayer in the world.  \nThere will be 2 hand outs for each talk: an outline of the talk and some texts from Merton to contemplate in the quiet time provided after the talks. The day with close with Q & A and reflection thereon.
